IQM Quantum Computers announced March 6 that it has been selected to provide quantum equipment for the installation of the first Spanish quantum computer.

The company, a european leader in quantum computers, is part of a consortium led by Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech, another startup in the same field, and GMV, a private Spanish business group.
IQM will deliver a first quantum processing unit (QPU) by the second quarter of 2023.
The quantum computer will be installed at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and integrated into the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer, the most powerful in Spain.

IQM was selected by Quantum Spain, an initiative promoted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation together with the Secretary of State for Digitization and Artificial Intelligence (SEDIA) in December 2022, to build the first quantum computer for public use in southern Europe.

The integration of the quantum computer in MareNostrum 5 will have the potential to significantly increase the impact of research and innovation, offering solutions that complement the capabilities of existing supercomputers, which will be available to the research community, companies and public organizations, and enhancing technological and industrial development in Spain and the creation of highly qualified jobs.
